Kindness in the Classroom

Dear Parents,

Our First Grade class made pledge today to be kind to one another.  A packet of images and sayings are being sent home today with your child. They were used to lead a discussion about how important it is for everyone to give and receive kindness.  We role played how we can extend kindness and what it means to be unkind to our friends.  Please ask your child about our discussion J

The students participated in a hands-on activity using a piece of paper to further illustrate what unkind words do to a person.  Each student was given a clean perfect piece of paper and through the course of our discussion the paper was folded in a variety of ways.  A the end of the discussion the paper was then crumbled into a little ball and smashed under our feet. I explained to the children that every unkind thing that we let come out of our mouth is like each wrinkle on the piece of paper.  It permanently affects the paper never to return to its original clean perfect state.  I attempted to help the children understand how important it is to help each other stay as beautiful as that clean smooth piece of paper.  A piece of plain paper and the crumbled paper is also being sent home for further discussion at home.
